Former capital of the Dukes of Brittany, Nantes is a city steeped in history, situated in the Loire Atlantique region, although some prefer to still consider it part of Brittany... Either way, this is a city of art and culture, with a past firmly anchored in maritime tradition, evoking memories of schooners bringing spices, coffee, sugar and exotic timber from the former colonies.

Among the places to visit here are the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, and the Passage Pommeraye, a curiosity, not to mention parks and gardens and many museums, one of which is dedicated to Jules Verne, who was born here. Also, the magnificent fine arts museum, the planetarium…

Nowadays Nantes is the biggest metropolitan area in the west of France, an industrial centre as well as a hub for the service sector, and home to a major university. Established at the confluence of the Loire and Erdre rivers, this city is 2,000 years old and has an eventful history, part of which was involvement in triangular trading and slave trafficking during colonial times. The rival of Rennes, Nantes is the capital of the Pays de Loire region. In town there is a TGV railway station, and nearby the largest airport in northwest France.

The photographs of fishing huts were taken on the Pornic side of the Retz coastline, known as the Jade Coast: Préfailles, La Plaine-sur-Mer and St Brévin are charming places to explore, between the River Loire (and the famous bridge of St Nazaire) and the Atlantic Ocean.
