The Château

Josselin is bursting with character and atmosphere thanks to its medieval alleyways and of course the grand and magnificent Rohan château, a prime example of feudal Renaissance architecture with its three towers and its flamboyant Gothic style façade, reflected in the waters of the Oust. The medieval festival in July is a high point of the year, where history is brought to life with period costumes and a festive ambiance abounds.

The town was a key territory of the Dukes of Brittany, and other landmarks to see here include the Notre-Dame-du-Roncier Basilica and beautiful half-timbered houses, the oldest of which dates from 1538. Traffic on the Nantes-Brest canal passes right through Josselin, the river having been canalised in 1830.

The town was built at the beginning of the 11th century by Seigneur Guéthenoc, whose son Josselin gave the town its name. Keen walkers will find their fill of fresh air in the surrounding countryside and the superb forest of Lanoué, and typical regional produce is on offer.

Also a gateway to the Forest of Brocéliande near Ploërmel, a land steeped in the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Through Arthurian festivals and exhibitions, artisanal work, and phantasmagorical landscapes, let yourself be transported to a mythical world of Celtic legend.
