Châteaulin

The small town of Châteaulin is gently spread along a bend of the River Aulne. In times gone by, the town was long a favoured place for salmon fishing and even today the viaduct which spans the river is a good vantage point for watching the ascent of the trout and salmon, notably during a visit to the aquatic observatory.

The tree-lined quays overlooked by aligned rows of houses with colourful façades make for an attractive town centre. Don’t miss the Notre-Dame chapel, which is set on plot accessed via a triumphal arch and contains some beautiful works, including a 15th century representation of Saint Anne, and the Virgin and Child.

Châteaulin, formerly a ducal town, is situated halfway between Brest and Quimper, and is the gateway to the Monts d’Arrée hills and the Crozon peninsula. Previously the area was also known for slate, the transportation of which was facilitated by the Nantes-Brest Canal.
